The green belt is arguably the most widely known planning theory of the last century, becoming a significant part of the planning landscape. Despite this however the Green Belt policy is a topic of much contest and controversy. This scrutiny derives from the housing shortage that the UK has faced for many years and the question between believers of pro growth, who feel that in order for cities to develop and modernise expansion is necessary, and those who feel we must secure safegaurds to protect the green belt.

So should we protect our green belt and stop any development within it, or is developing on the green belt a neccessity, in an attempt to solving Britains Housing crisis?
